Computer Issues Aren't Always Malware - Sometimes, the MOUSE Did It!
Posted 06/04/2013 by Dudette Loves Her Dell

Relative was having computer issues - when I was coming for a visit, they asked if I could look at it.

"It won't work right" and "the mouse is messing up" were the complaints. Well, that and it hadn't been turned on for three months (new baby, new job, and sleep is more valuable than computer time at home).

It came up, I ran the Microsoft cleaning & defragmenting utilities, Windows Update, and then started installing & running the OTHER programs in my toolkit. Cleaned registry, defragmented registry, wiped unused space (speeds the computer up more than you might think & it even runs slightly cooler since it isn't having to check the whole hard disk for file fragments), and updated drivers.

Still having issues - the mouse wasn't clicking right, so I pulled out my mini travel mouse (short cable) to speed up working. Having to use the mouse on a book in my lap (short cable on desktop pc meant that it didn't reach the surface of the desk). Got everything up & running, pulled my mouse off it, and let the relative try things out.

Everything went well until the old optical mouse (original to system - which is about four to five years old) started clicking to one side of the space where it was supposed to be pointed at....not good when using Excel for financials!

Cue refrain of "it's still not working". Another mouse pulled out and put on it - turns out is has a broken wire...issues get worse. My mini mouse is pulled out and three clicks later, we run to the store for a NEW MOUSE!

Relative is very happy with updated, cleaned, & defragmented system that is running a bit faster - but that cheap new $10 mouse made the biggest single difference in using the computer!

Never Underestimate The Ignorance of a User....

I was reading a computer user forum where people of varying degrees of intelligence and experience ask for advice on how to get their computers working better (or working at all, sometimes).

Poster was having trouble because the laptop wouldn't boot up or run any programs.

He wanted to know if it might be possible that it was because his hard drive was missing.....

I have a headache.....

Everything that is connected usually isn't Tech support's problem

I had a lady call in at our tech support office with a complaint about her tv not working. She also add that her dishwasher wasn't working, and her microwave wasn't working. I work for a cable company, why is it that people think that their microwave and dishwasher issues are our problem? Its call check your breaker box, you may find your answer

Do I plug in the other end?

My wife is a wonderful person, mother of my children, and a good cook to boot. She is, however, not technical.

I had instructed her to plug in one end of her sync cable into the phone in preparation for syncing with the computer. She held up the USB end: "Do I plug this in, too?"
