So I don't work as any sort of tech support but while I was in school, I worked for my ALC and was periodically asked to show them how to do a lot of things on the computers. Anyway, there was this one computer that would turn off just moments after turning on. I suggested that the problem may be a faulty power cord and to try switching it with another station. She decides to have the Apple technician stop by and see if they can fix the problem completely ignoring me. He leaves a few hours later saying he can't figure out what the problem could be, mind you he spent the entire time working on the administrator's main computer after only turning the broken one on a few times.
After the third time of having this technician come to fix the computer and getting nowhere, my boss complains to me. I find out that they even moved the computer to the back room only to have the new computer on the original station have the same problem. I again tell her that it is probably an issue with the power cord and have to explain to her why the computer can't possibly be the issue when she switched it to another station and it was fine. Needless to say she finally got a new power cord and the computer worked fine.
My boss was rather computer illiterate so I can forgive her for not realizing I was right. I mean this was a woman who was convinced one of the word processors didn't have a spell check because it wasn't on the tool bar and actually told students not to use it because of that. What I can't figure out is how the Apple technician for our school came three separate times, had her switch out the computers, and still couldn't figure out that it was simply a faulty power cord.
