Many readers may have heard of the Arduino prototyping platform. I have been experimenting with it, and it's a blast, a hobby I heartily recommend. I am looking forward to its prank possibilities.
A commonly-available ultrasonic sensor is the HC-SR04, somewhat resembling a small pair of binoculars mounted on a circuit board. I am busy convincing my nontechnical wife that these are actually thermal sensors for medical use, designed for quickly measuring a woman's body temperature by aiming at certain twin...features. I even went so far as to print a bogus label, which I slapped over the reseller's one on the antistatic bag.
